Over the past two decades, Shaykh Mahdi Lock has witnessed a significant transformation in the realm of Arabic learning. With the advent of technology, platforms such as Zoom, YouTube, apps and websites have revolutionized the way Arabic can be acquired. Today's Arabic students enjoy access to opportunities that were simply unavailable over 20 years ago.
Shaykh Mahdi Lock embarked on his Arabic journey at the age of 18, armed with minimal knowledge of the language. After a year of intensive study in Fes in 2001, he made remarkable progress through unwavering dedication and hard work. This journey culminated in his ability to translate khutbahs upon returning to the UK.
Learning Arabic can be likened to the initial effort of pushing a boulder uphill, demanding relentless determination and commitment. However, with time, the boulder gains momentum and begins to roll on its own.
Shaykh Mahdi Lock's year abroad was pivotal. 20 years ago, before the advent of the aforementioned technologies, spending time in the Arabic-speaking world, as Mahdi did, was a must for mastering the language, but that might not be the case now.
As an educator, Shaykh Mahdi Lock holds a BA in Arabic and History from the University of Leeds, an MA in Arabic Linguistics from King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah and a Diploma in Translation from the Chartered Institute of Linguists in London, along with Membership (MCIL).
His academic pursuits extend to the study of theology, law and Islamic sciences, guided by esteemed mentors in England, North Africa and the Middle East. He has translated more than 20 books and possesses nearly two decades of teaching experience, spanning from primary school to university levels.
Additional offerings encompass private instruction in various sciences, particularly fiqh and the facilitation of online study circles like the Halaqah Book Club. Shaykh Mahdi Lock's MA thesis, authored in Arabic, explored the translation of ayaat on marriage rulings into English, with a summary featured in the Jordanian Journal for Arabic Language and Literature.

Most of our students catch up on recordings between semesters. Some go to 'On demand" courses and watch the recordings of older courses.
